Its a really false image. So as much, there's not so much as a strong response to procrastination in cultures where things are a little bit more lax in terms of timelines. Unsubscribe. I'm going to start with a quote that a colleague and friend of mine who got me into this area of research, Tim Pychyl at Carleton University in Canada, one that he often uses to make the distinction between procrastination and delay. We think about the immediate damage it can cause. We always think of there being bidirectional arrows between all of those things. So if we tell people to recall a time that they're procrastinating and then give them this sort of script that re-frames that experience in a self-compassionate manner, basically You're not the first person to procrastinate, nor will you be the last. But sometimes we end up being jerks because weve got ourselves into a procrastination pickle, because weve left something. And then also, cut yourself a little bit of slack about some of the creative procrastination, like recognizing that weve got this image of a productive person being this person who is never distracted, whos always focused, who never procrastinates, whos just hustling all the time. 6 Depression can also lead to self-doubt. And there's been some research on that. What are the next things that you're looking at in the realm of procrastination or even the other areas where you're doing research? I want the other person, if theyre waiting on something from me, I want them to understand that its not because theyve done anything wrong or Im angry at them, or I just want to take that uncertainty off their plate. And that might be something that is a really strong value for you that you can use as a motivator. However, there wasn't a link with the other form of perfectionism. Is the task actually stupid, or is it something you should do, youre just afraid to do it, so youre demeaning it in case you fail? CURT NICKISCH: For me personally, the idea of a pre-mortem and testing your assumptions is kind of attractive because I expect that could help a lot with things that always seem to take longer than you thought they were going to. So you take that task that's really stressing you out, you've got that report you've got to write, you're worried about what your manager's going to think because maybe a promotion rides on it, or you're worried if you're going to be doing it correctly, or if you're going to do it as perfectly as what you want, and you take that task, you put it aside and you get busy with other things and you've now have this immediate sense of relief. I just think of one to mitigate against each and that keeps it contained and it satisfies my anxiety. Thats episode 295. And the general gist of it is that habits make behaviors more automatic. I'm really thrilled to be here. If we dont try and we fail, there is less reflection on the self than if we try our hardest and fail. But the minutes you take action and start to encounter problems, which we all do, right, it's never a straight direct path from point A to point B when we're trying to reach our goals, there's ups and downs along the way, but people who have these sort of self-critical perfectionism, the minute they hit one of those bumps in the road, so to speak, on the path to their goal, they give up. So think, again, using your values is a really good thing there. But there are also a lot of other ways to use habits. I often recommend this to psychiatry residents and NPs I train, challenging them to read 3 books in 60 days using this method. They tend to also have more insecure job status, in other words, they're jumping from job to job and they never really advance much, and they actually make less money than people who don't chronically procrastinate. I think it worked out to the extent that they had a one point increase on this measure, so it was a self-report measure that we use. We think about people procrastinating things that they have to do every month or every week or every day. What are the sort of consequences that they experience? So people think a lot about learning from other people and learning from science when it comes to productivity. So the classic example is the student who the only time they ever clean their dorm room is when they should be studying for exams. So my strategy and my system is kind of tailored to that. I have the value of the two of us being in a relationship where we make up for each others weaknesses, that were there to compensate for each others weaknesses. Sirois: The quick answer is you can't. So actually looking at more objective measures using Smart watches to track people's behavior, their physical activity and seeing again, if in fact people who are prone to procrastination are actually being less active than others. Knowing what the strengths of people are or knowing how to discover them from conversation. So it is really complicated, but theres always times where people need to get on to doing something. And I remember there was one journalist I spoke to and he said, Yeah, I remember when I was a student at university and I hate cleaning, I hate housework, but whenever I had a big paper or exam coming, boy, was my house ever clean. And so instead of doing studying, he was running around getting the house perfectly clean. And so some of the estimates, the rough estimates we've gotten for that versus somebody who procrastinates on a fairly regular basis, almost to the point where it's like part of their personality, we can almost look at it like a personality trait, that percentage of the population in student samples, for example college and university students, it's estimated about 50% of college and university students procrastinate chronically, whereas about anywhere between 80% to 95% procrastinate at least once or more, but not necessarily to a large degree. Most of us are decent humans and its not consistent with our values to be being jerks. It's really about the emotions that are associated with the task and not necessarily the unpleasantness of the task. There's nothing special about my struggle. Is there a difference?
